Holocaust - The Nightcomers: 45 years of Metal Legacy

Introduction

In today's post, I will go back and review the album of Holocaust debut album, The Nightcomers. This album is a classic and a must listen to for any heavy metal fan. This album is very underrated. I will share what I think of each song, my favorites, and if I have a least favorite.

Information on Album

This album came out in April of 1981, almost 45 years ago. Holocaust came out in 1978 and was formed in Edinburgh. This band is one of the bands that came out from Scotland and part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in the late 70s and early 80s. The album was released by Phoenix Record and Filmworks. The album was reissued in 2000 on CD by Edgy Records. The album was released as a double CD by Castle/Sanctuary in 2003, including all the tracks from the "Smokin' Valves", "Heavy Metal Mania", and "Coming Through" singles and from the Live from the Raw Loud 'n' Live Tour EP.

Track list/Album Review

  1. Smokin' Values - The guitar style riff in this song is great. Song open with drums. A great opener. Song feels like it's about wanting to rock out.

  2. Death or Glory - The guitar riff opens up really heavy. One of my favorites off this album. This song feels like it's being young and rebellious. The album was covered by Six Feet Under from 1997 album of Warpath. As Well as German Power Metal band, Gamma Ray from the album Master of Confusion.

  3. Come on Back - The song starts out with band rocking out. The song feels like in a punk rock way of finding a love that you have lost again.

  4. Mavrock - The song starts out in more of like a doom like style. Reminds me a little of Black Sabbath. The song isn't bad and works for Holocaust.

  5. It Doesn't Matter to Me - Opens up into drums meets guitar. This song is more like a punk rock. Song feels like it's about rocking out no matter what.

  6. Cryin' Shame - Song starts out with a good guitar riff. Song feels like a rock song. Song feels like it's about someone that upset you.

  7. Heavy Metal Mania - This song starts out with a sick riff. This song feels like an anthem for Heavy Metal fans and metal heads. I would say one of Holocaust best songs and my favorite song from this album. Gamma Ray covered the song in 1995 in their single "Rebellion in a Dreamland". Which was a bonus track on Their album of the Land of The Free.

  8. Push It Around - The song is another rock out song. The song feels like it's talking about a woman. The song is okay but not as special as Heavy Metal Mania or Death and Glory.

  9. The Nightcomers - Song starts out slow with the guitar. Then goes into a rocking song. This feels more like Death and Glory as in really Heavy. This song might be my least favorite because I didn't really get into this song.

    Favorite Songs: Heavy Metal Mania

    Least Favorite Songs: The Nightcomers

    Closing Thoughts

I would say overall, this album is a good album. I would give it a 7 out of 10. I wasn't as big into the last two tracks. I also wasn't as big on Mavrock. But the tracks Death and Glory and Heavy Metal Mania show why this album is a classic. Listening to it for the first time in a while, the album reminds me of Kill Em All by Metallica. Which Metallica did cover a song called the Small Hours. If you are into heavy metal or the older stuff of Metal, this is an album for you. Let me know your thoughts!
