Jeff Hanneman – 13 Years Since His Passing
Introduction
On this day in 2013, we lost Jeff Hanneman of Slayer. His final show with the band was in October 2010 during the Big 4 tour with Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax. Not long after, Jeff suffered the spider bite that led to a serious infection. Slayer announced he wouldn’t be touring while he recovered, and Gary Holt of Exodus and Pat O’Brien of Cannibal Corpse filled in.
Tom Araya later said Jeff was recovering, but the infection devastated his overall health. By 2013, Kerry King mentioned Jeff was dealing with major health issues and couldn’t return to the road. On May 2nd, Jeff passed away from liver failure. A week later, the official cause of death was confirmed as alcohol‑related cirrhosis. Slayer themselves were shocked — they believed Jeff was slowly improving.
Slayer continued working on Repentless, and “Piano Wire” was dedicated to Jeff. The album dropped in 2015. His loss hit fans hard.
